With the current rise of remote instruction this semester, video editing from various sources has become an increasingly important tool. There are many video editors available, many of which are pay products, for different platforms and for varying skill sets and production needs. This guide is intended to help make your choices easier. SAS-IT is recommending the following video editors, all of which are available for free.

Quicktime

QuickTime is video playback application that comes with MacOS. It is located in the Application folder. It also comes with some very basic video editing features. QuickTime Player lets you make common movie edits like trim, rearrange, and rotate. You can also split a movie into multiple clips and manipulate each one individually. QuickTime can be used to record your Macs screen. You can also record the screen of a connected iPhone or iPad and save it as a movie file on your Mac.

iMovie

For more advanced video editing features, Rutgers recommends iMovie. It is available as a free download from the App store for the MacOS as well as iOS. iMovie can easily add photos and videos to projects, trim clips, add seamless transitions, and fade audio. More advanced features include adding picture-in-picture and split-screen effects. You can also add built-in sound effects or record your own voiceover. iMovie for iOS and iMovie for macOS are designed to work together. You can start cutting a project on your iOS device and then use AirDrop or iCloud Drive to wirelessly transfer it to your Mac for finishing touches. iMovie also has built in sharing meaning you can send your movie via Messages, post on popular social media sites like Instagram, and publish directly to YouTube in 4K. iMovie for iOS works with ClassKit, so teachers can assign projects to students, and students can easily hand in their finished assignments right from the app.

Windows 10 Video Editor

Windows 10 includes a strong, albeit basic, video editor directly within its operating system. This application allows for the use of a simple and easy to use interface to accomplish video editing tasks including trimming, splicing and adding text overlays. To begin using the application a user simply creates a new “Video Project”, imports their previously recorded videos and drops them onto the Storyboard to begin editing. They can then use the application to accomplish basic tasks including trimming, splicing and adding additional recorded clips to the same video project. Windows 10 Video Editor can also accommodate users looked for more advanced features including adding text overlays, incorporating title cards and utilizing video filters. Exporting a completed video project is simple and allows the user to choose which quality they wish by a basic drop down box. Windows 10 Video Editor exports videos in .mp4 format.

OpenShot

OpenShot is a free open-source cross platform video editor. OpenShot supports the following operating systems: Linux (most distributions are supported), Windows (version 7, 8, and 10+), and OS X (version 10.9+). Project files are also cross-platform, meaning you can save a video project in one OS and open it on another. All video editing software features are available on all platforms. Clips on the timeline can be adjusted in many ways, including scaling, trimming and rotation. Over 400 transitions are included in OpenShot, which lets you gradually fade from one clip to another. Audio editing and title templates are also included.
