  • Adding an Event (JEvents)

    Overview

    JEvents is a third-party extension for Joomla! that allows you to add event information in either a calendar or list format.  As you create events, they will appear on your website in JEvents menu items or modules that have been configured to display events from the appropriate categories.


    Procedure

    1. Login to the Joomla! Administrator back-end.
    2. Click on "Components > JEvents"

      Components > JEvents

    3. At the JEvents Dashboard, hover the mouse over the left sidebar (or top menu, if the left sidebar does not appear), then select Manage Events.

    4. Click the "New" button: JEvents "New" Button
    5. Enter a title for the event in the "Title" field (see #1 below).
    6. If your website has more than one calendar, select the appropriate one from the "Events calendar" dropdown menu (see #2 below).
    7. For Categories,select one or more categories that should display your event (see #3 below).
    8. Enter a short description of your event in the "Description" text box.  Note that you can format your description the same way you would format an article (see #4 below).
    9. Enter the location of your event in the "Location" field (found under the "Description" text box).

    11. Click the mini-calendar icon below "Start date" and select a start date for your event (see #2 below).

    14. Type an End Time in the End Time field and select "am" or "pm" (see #4 below).
    15. Click "Save & Close" (see #5 below).

    Overview

    This feature requires an up-to-date version of the JEvents plugin "JEvents - File and Image uploads for Event Descriptions". If you find that you cannot add an image to your event, please SUBMIT REQUEST to request us to install or update this JEvents plugin for your website.

    Overview

    JEvents is a Joomla! component that lets you create events and display them in a variety of ways. We commonly use the component to display future and past events. If you haven't already set up JEvents Categories and added Events, please do that before making the module:

     

    Procedure

    This is how to set up a module to display upcoming events:

    1. Go to Components > Modules:

      Extensions > Modules
    2. Select the New button from the top left of the page: New button
    3. Select "JEvents - Latest Events Module" as the type of module from the list:Select a Module Type: JEvents Latest Events
    4.  Give the module a title and a position. Usually, this module works best in the "Sidebar B (sidebar-b)" position.  See a list of commonly used module positions here.JEvents Module: Title and position
    5. Unless the module should appear on all pages of the website, assign it to specific pages as follows:
      1. Click the "Menu Assignment" tab
      2. Click the dropdown box to the right of Module Assignment and select "Only on the pages selected" (see #1 below).
      3. For Menu Selection, click "None" to the right of Select (see #2 below).
      4. Click the check boxes for any menu items that should display the module when clicked (see #3 below).Module Menu Assignment
    6. Click the Module tab.  Under JEvents - Latest Events Module on the left are options you can change, depending on how you want your events to be displayed:
      1. Select categories – leave blank for all: Select which categories you want to display, or leave it blank if you want to show events from all categories.
      2. Maximum Events to display:enter the maximum number of events to be displayed.
      3. Display events from the next ? days: Enter a number for how many days into the future to display the events.
      4. Past Events Only: change this to "Future Events Only" to only display future events.

    Overview

    There are various types of menu items that can display JEvents calendar events on a Joomla! website.  This article demonstrates some of the most commonly used types:

    • Date Range

    Procedure

    To create a menu item that displays JEvents in one of the formats shown under Examples, do the following:

    • Log on to your site using the Administrator Login.
    • Go to Menus > Main Menu  (or whichever menu you'd like to create the menu item in) and click Add New Menu Item:

    • A "Menu Item Type" pop-up window will open.  Select JEvents - Core (see #1 below), then select the desired format for the event display:

      • To display a date range of events in the "Float" format, select Date Range (see #2 below)
        • Go to the "Range Date & Time Settings" tab and select the desired options for the date range to display
        • Go to the "Options" tab and select "Float" from the "Choose JEvents Theme" dropdown menu
      • To display events in a table-style list, select List of Events (see #3 below)
        • Go to the "Options" tab
        • Under "Select Columns to Display," click the columns to be displayed in the list of events.
      • To display events in a calendar format, select View by Month (see #4 below)
    • When done selecting the menu item type and configuring its options, click Save & Close.

  • Embedding a Latest Events Module within an Article

    Overview

    You can embed a Latest Events module within an article, so that a list of events appears within the article.

    Procedure

    1. Create a "JEvents Latest Events" module to display the latest events from one or more categories.
    2. Create an article that will contain the JEvents Latest Events module
    3. Select the Modulebutton below the text area.  If you see two Module buttons, click the second one (it looks like it has multiple windows in its icon):

    4. Enter part or all of the module's title in the search field, then press [Enter] or click the search icon (see #1 below).
    5. In the "ID" column, click the button with the number inside it to the left of your module's title (this is the module's ID number; see #2 below).

      Although you can also click on the module title itself, we recommend clicking the module's ID number instead. This is because the module's ID number will not change and will be unique, while your module's title may change, and two or more modules may have the same title.
    6. Save & Close your article

    • Under "Repeat type", select "No Repeat" (see #2 below).
    • To enact this change, click "Save & Close" (see #3 below).

      JEvents: 3.6.x: Delete all repetitions of an event

  • SAS Events Module - Adding and Removing Events

    Before you start, identify your unit's calendar "Org ID" from the Rutgers Calendar of Events.  You can find information on finding or creating a Rutgers Calendar of Events Org ID for your unit here.

    • Log into the back end administrator interface for your website.
    • Go to Extensions -> Modules. See #1 below:

    • Click the Search Tools button (see #1 below). Then click Select Type and select "Rutgers Events" (see #2 below):

    • Click the title of the Rutgers Events module that you would like to modify.

    • There are two ways of adding organizations' events to the module:
      • Click in the Organization Name field and either select a unit from the dropdown menu, or begin typing the name of your unit (see #1 below).  Note: your unit's ID will only appear in the dropdown menu if you have one or more events in the Rutgers Calendar of Events.
      • Add your "Org ID" to the "Additional Org ID Numbers" field.  If you need to add multiple Org ID numbers, separate them with a comma. See #2 below:

    • When done, click Save & Close on the top left. See #3 above.
