  • Creating a Button Link

    Adding links to your article

    To add links to any article, select the text you want to create into a link, then click on the Insert/Edit link in the tool menu.

    In the link tab in the popup, enter the link you want the button to redirect the person to. You can also change the text of the link if you prefer.

    Overview

    This page shows how to create a popup link from an image to a file with JCE Editor Pro's Image Button.  Note: This can also be done in the standard JCE Editor.

    Procedure

    Step 1: Click Insert/Edit Image button (the one with a star)

    Step 2: Select the image to be linked to the popup

    • Navigate to the folder where the image is located (or, for a new image, where it should be saved) using the "Folders" pane (see #1 below). If you are adding a new image, click the Upload button (see #2 below):

    • If you clicked Upload, choose the Browse button at the bottom of the "Upload" window and navigate to the location of the image on your computer (see #1 below). Alternately, you can drag and drop images to the 'Drop files here' area (see #2 below):

    • Once you have located or uploaded your image, select its filename from the "Name" pane:

    Step 3: Create the popup link

    • Select the "Popups" tab in "Image Manager Extended" (see #1 below)
    • For "Popup Type," select "JCE Mediabox" (see #2 below)
    • Browse to the folder containing the file that should appear in the popup window (see #3 below)
      • Note that you can upload a new file using the Upload button.
    • Enter a title for the file in the "Title" field (see #4 below)
    • Enter a caption for the file in the "Caption" field (see #5 below)
    • Click Insert once complete (see #6 below)

    • Save & Close your article.  The image you selected in Step 2, when clicked, will link to a popup window displaying the file you selected in Step 3.

    Overview

    This page shows how to create a popup link from an image to a file with JCE Editor Pro's Image Button.  Note: This can also be done in the standard JCE Editor.

    Procedure

    Step 1: Click Insert/Edit Image button (the one with a star)

    Overview

    You can link an image to a popup window that displays a larger version of the same image, another image, a PDF, or even a Joomla! article.

    Option 1: Make a popup link to a Joomla! Article

    1) Add the button image.

    4. Click the name of the top-level category that contains the article you want to link to (see #2 below).
    5. If your article is in a subcategory, click the name of the subcategory containing the article.  (If the article is in a category several levels down, you may need to repeat this step until you find the article).
    6. Click once on the name of the article you want linked to the button.

    3) Create the popup.

    1. In the Link window, click the Popups tab (see #1 below).
    2. In Popup Type, choose JCE MediaBox Popups (see #2 below).  (If you do not see the JCE MediaBox Popups, submit a workorder asking us to add the JCE MediaBox Popups plugin to your site).
    3. Select "Internal Links" for the Media Type option (see #3 below).  This will display the article content without the surrounding elements such as the banner and navigation menu.
    4. Click Insert (see #4 below) and then Save & Close the article.
    5. Test the page to check the display.  If the window needs to be a different size, go back to the JCE MediaBox Popups options and adjust Dimensions (see #5 below). The first field after Dimensions is width in pixels; the second field is height in pixels.

    popup imageOption 2:  Make a popup link to a File or Image

    The "Rutgers Day" image at right is an example of an image that links to a PDF file in a popup window.  If adding a popup to an existing image or file link, skip to step 5.

    1. Click the Insert/Add Image tool and navigate and select the image to be linked to the popup windowIf the image already exists in the article, copy the link from the URL field.
    2. Select the image you uploaded in Step 1.
    3. Click the Insert/Edit Link button on the editor toolbar (See screenshot under Option 1, 2b above).
    4. If  the popup will display the full size version of an image that has already been inserted into the article, click it then the Link tool and copy the URL and continue the next step to add the popup.
      Otherwise, in the Link window, look to the right of the URL field for the "Browse" icon (it looks like a tiny piece of paper).  Click it and browse to the image or PDF that should open in the popup:

    5. In the Link window, click the "Popups" tab (see #1 below).

    Overview

  • Creating Anchor Links (Joomla! 3.x)

    This procedure explains how to create anchor links within articles on web sites using Joomla! 3.x.  Anchor links allow you to link to specific text on a page.


    • Type a name for the anchor.  Names for anchors must begin with a letter, cannot contain spaces, and must be unique within articles.

    • Click Insert.  You will see an anchor icon in front of the text you selected.
    • To create a link from somewhere within the same article:
      • Highlight the text that will be linked to the anchor.
      • Click the Insert/Edit link button on the editing toolbar:

      • At the bottom of the Link pop-up window, click the Article Anchors dropdown menu (see #1 below).
      • Select the anchor name you entered earlier (see #2 below).
      • Click Insert (see #3 below).

    • To create a link from another article:
      • Save the current article:
        • If you are in the front-end editor, click the Save button to the upper left.
        • If you are in the Joomla! Administrator, click the Save & Close button to the upper left: "Save & Close" button
      • Select the second article to edit following steps 1-3 of Editing Articles or create a new article.
      • Highlight the text that will be linked to the anchor link you created earlier.
      • Click the Insert/Edit link button on the editing toolbar:

      • Click the top-level category that contains the article you want to link to (see #1 below).
      • If your article is in a subcategory, click the arrow to the left of the subcategory containing the article containing your anchor link.  (If the article is in a category several levels down, you may need to repeat this step until you find the article).
      • You should see the anchor link you created listed below the article - click on it (see #2 below).

      • Click Insert (see #3 below).

    • If you are editing the article from the front end of the web site, click the Save button to the upper left to save your changes and close the article.
    • If you are working in the Joomla! Administrator, to save your changes and continue editing the article, click the Save button to the upper left: "Save" button

  • Creating and Editing URL Menu Items (Joomla 3.x)

    This procedure explains how to create menu items linking to external web sites using Joomla! 3.x. 


    Create a new external URL menu item

    • Log on to your site using the Administrator Login.
    • At the Joomla! Control Panel, click "Menu" (found under "Structure" to the left):

    • Click the name of the menu (found in the Title column) where the external link will be added (in most cases this will be "Main Menu").
    • Click the New icon in the upper left corner of the Menu : Menus page: New button
    • In the Menu : New Menu Item window, click the Select button:

    • A pop-up window will open. Click System Links(see #1 below), then select URL(see #2 below):

    • Enter a name for the link in the Menu Titlefield (see #1 below).
    • Enter the full web address (URL) of the external web site in the Link field (see #2 below).  The URL must contain the "http://" or "https://" portion of the web address.
    • (Optional) If the external link should appear in a dropdown menu below an existing menu item, select that menu item from the Parent Item dropdown menu (see #3 below).
    • (Recommended) When creating an external URL link, change Target Window to "New Window With Navigation."  This keeps your site in the original browser window when a visitor clicks on the external link (see #4 below).

    • Click Save & Close to the upper left: "Save & Close" button

    Edit an existing external URL menu item

    • Log on to your site using the Administrator Login.
    • At the Joomla! Control Panel, click "Menu" (found under "Structure" to the left):

    • Click the name of the menu (found in the Title column) containing the external link to be changed.
    • Click the menu item containing the external link to be changed.
    • Enter the updated web address (URL) of the external web site in the Link field.  The URL must contain the "http://" or "https://" portion of the web address:

    • Click Save & Close to the upper left: "Save & Close" button
  • Creating Links in Articles (Joomla! 3.x)

    This procedure explains how to create links within an article on web sites using Joomla! 3.x.


    Internal links (links to pages on the same website as the current page)

    1. Select an article to edit following steps 1-3 of Editing Articles (Joomla! 3.x).
    2. Highlight the text that will be linked to a second article.
    3. Click the Insert/Edit link button on the editing toolbar:

    5. Under Links, click Content (see #1 below).
    6. Click the arrow to the left of the top-level category that contains the article you want to link to (see #2 below).
    7. If your article is in a subcategory, click the arrow to the left of the subcategory containing the article.  (If the article is in a category several levels down, you may need to repeat this step until you find the article).
    8. Click once on the name of the article you want to link to.
    9. Click Insert to the bottom of the Link popup window (see #3 below).

    External links (links to pages not on the same website as the current page)

    The procedure is similar to the one demonstrated above.

    • With external links, the target website page can be pasted directly into the URL field in the Link pop-up window. Make sure you include the http:// or https:// prefix of the URL. (See #1 below).
    • Be sure to set the Target to "Open in new window" for links to external websites (See #2 below).Creating an external link

     

    To create a link that appears as a button:

    1. Select the link.
    2. Click on the Styles dropdown menu (to the right of "Format" or "Paragraph" on the editor toolbar).
    3. Then select or type "button".
    4. Your link will look like a button (similar to the picture at the bottom).

    Get the public link to the Box file

    General:  Be sure there is at least one other co-owner in your unit with full access to the files.

    1. Click the Share button on the right side of the file.
    2. Below Share Link, click the slider button for "Create shared link". Text will change to "Shared link is created" and a URL will appear.
    3. Underneath the URL, change the access from "People in your company" or "Invited people only" to "People with the link". 
    4. If the URL provided will work as it is, click Copy and move on to "Create link to the Box file" section. If a shortened or custom link is preferred, continue with next step in this section.

    5. [optional]  Click "Link Settings".
    6. [optional] Enter a custom path with no spaces (12-30 characters).
    7. Click Save.
    8. Click Copy to copy the URL to the clipboard for the next step.

    1. In the Joomla article, select the text or image to be linked and click "Insert/edit link" tool.
    2. Paste into the "URL" text box.
    3. Select "Open in new window" for Target. This is standard for links to content on external websites though not used if the link opens in a popup. (See optional "Set the link to open in a popup window" section.)

    5. Save and Close.

    1. While still in the Insert/Edit link window, click the "Popups" tab.
    2. Select JCE MediaBox Popups in the Popup Type field.
    3. Choose External Links/Iframe in Media Type.
    4. Click Update or Save to save changes, whichever appears. If establishing the link initially,  Save will appear.  If the link is being modified, Update will show as the button text.  Both will save settings.

  • Link to Files on Box and Display in Popup (Joomla! 4)

    Get the public link to the Box file

    General:  Be sure there is at least one other co-owner in your unit with full access to the files.

    1. Click the Share button on the right side of the file.
    2. Below Share Link, click the slider button for "Create shared link". Text will change to "Shared link is created" and a URL will appear.
    3. Underneath the URL, change the access from "People in your company" or "Invited people only" to "People with the link".

    4. Click Update or Save to save changes, whichever appears. If establishing the link initially,  Save will appear.  If the link is being modified, Update will show as the button text.  Both will save settings.

  • Uploading and linking to PDF files using JCE Editor

    Overview

    This page describes how to upload and link to a PDF file using the "Insert link" button.

    1) Find the Link tool.

    Highlight text; select "Insert/edit link" button

    2) Find the Browse button in the Link window.

    • A Link popup window will appear.
    • To the right of the URLfield, click the Browse icon.  It looks like a sheet of paper.

    3) Navigate the File Browser.

    • In the File Browser window, browse to the folder where the new file should be stored (see #1 below).
    • Click Upload to the upper right (see #2 below).

    4) Upload the file.

    • Click Browse and navigate to the file to be uploaded (see #1 and #2 below).
    • Click Upload (see #3 below).

    Click "Browse," find the file, and click "Upload"

     

    5) Select the uploaded file.

    • Make sure the newly uploaded file is highlighted in the File Browser window and the box to the left of it is checked (see #1 below).
    • Click Insert to the lower right (see #2 below).
    • Click Insert again at the Link popup window.

    Select file and click "Insert"

    6) Save the changes.

    Click Save (or Save & Close in the Joomla! back-end) to save the article.

  • Using Joomla's Web Links Component

    Overview

    Joomla's Web Links component is very useful when you have multiple external links that you need to display in various places on the website.  If your article will have more than 3-5 external links, instead of manually entering them into the article, consider creating the links within a Web Links category.

    Sample Use of Joomla! Web Links

    Links within a Web Links category can be displayed in a module on the website.

    Create Web Links Category

    1. In the Joomla! back-end, go to Components > Web Links.
    2. Click Categories.
    3. Click the New button to the upper left:

      Click the "New" button in "Web Links - Categories"
    4. Enter a name for your Web Links category in the "Title" field. You can also add an optional "Description:"

      Enter "Title" and "Description" for Web Links category
    5. When done, click Save & Close to the upper left: Save & close

    1. While in Components > Web Links, click Web Links (on left side).
    2. Click Newto the upper left.
    3. Enter the name of the website you will be linking to in the "Title" field (see #1 below).
    4. Enter the URL of the website in the "URL" field (see #2 below).
    5. Select the Web Links category from the "Category" dropdown menu to the right (see #3 below).
    6. Click the "Options" tab (see #4 below).
    7. Change "Target" to "Open in new window."
    8. When done, click Save & Close to the upper left (see #5 below).

    Use a Web Links Module

    This module can be positioned in ‘sidebar-b’, or included in an article as an embedded module.

    1. In the Joomla! back-end, go to Extensions > Modules.
    2. Click New to the upper left.
    3. Select Web Links.
    4. Enter a "Title" for the module (see #1 below).
    5. Select the category containing the web links from the "Category" dropdown menu (see #2 below).
    6. In the "Count" field, enter the number of web links to be displayed (see #3 below).
    7. Select "sidebar-b" from the "Position" dropdown menu to the right (see #4 below).
    8. Unless the module should be displayed on your entire website, click the "Menu Assignment" tab (see #5 below).
      • Change "Module Assignment" to "Only on the pages selected"
      • Click None to the right of "Menu Selection: Select: All,..." to clear the existing menu items
      • Check the menu items where your Web Links module should be displayed.
    9. When done, click Save & Close to the upper left (see #6 below).

    1. In the Joomla! back-end, go to Menus > Menu items.
    2. Click New to the upper left to create a new Menu Item.
    3. Enter a title for the menu item in the "Menu Title" field.
    4. To the right of "Menu Item Type" click Select.
    5. In the Menu Item Type popup, click Web Links, then click List Web Links in a Category.
    6. Select your Web Links category from the "Select a Category" dropdown menu.  Your browser should look something like this:

    7. From the Menu drop down on the right, select the menu where your menu item will be created.
    8. (Optional) Select a menu item from the "Parent Item" dropdown menu to the right; this will place your menu item under the Parent Item you select.
    9. Click Save & Close to the upper left.
