  • Adding an Image to a Menu Item

    There is an optional feature to add a small image to your menu items.  You can first create menu items following these instructions:

    NOTE: Only part of the image may be displayed, corresponding to a size slightly larger than the dimensions of the menu item itself.  Keep this in mind when selecting or adding an image to be displayed along with the menu item.

    1. Log on to your site using the Administrator Login.
    2. At the Joomla! Control Panel, click "Menu(s)" (found under "Structure" to the left):

    3. Click the name of the menu (found in the Title column) containing the menu item where the image will be added.
    4. Click the title of the menu item where the image will be added.
    5. Click the Link Type tab (see #1 below), then click Select to the right of Link Image (see #2 below):

    6. A popup window will appear, displaying folders and images that have been uploaded to Media.  Browse to the image you want to add, then click the Insert button to the lower right of the popup window (see #1 below).

    7. If the image has not yet been uploaded to Media from your computer, click the Upload icon (see #2 above), then follow these steps to upload it:
      1. Click the "Browse" button at the bottom of the Upload popup window (see #1 below), then browse to the image on your computer or network drive.
      2. Click the Upload button at the bottom of the popup window to add it to Media (see #2 below).

    8. Click Save & Close to the upper left, and your image will appear when the menu item is accessed: Save & Close
    9. Note: the image will not appear in the Main Menu if the SAS-RED website template is used for your website.

     

  • Adding Menu Modules

    Overview

    It is useful to display right hand menu modules on your site pages. These modules remain visible after a dropdown menu item on the Main Menu is clicked.

    Procedure

    1. In the Joomla! control panel (back end), navigate to Extensions > Modules, then click the New button to create a new module:

    2. For "Select a Module Type," select "Menu"
    3. Enter a title for the module in the "Title" field. For example, if you want to display a menu of the dropdown menu items under "People" on the Main Menu, enter "People" for the title.
    4. Configure Module Options:
      • For "Select Menu," select the menu to be displayed
      • For "Start Level," select "2."  This will display the dropdown menu item list corresponding to the menu assignment (selected later in this procedure)
      • For "Show Title," click Show
      • For "Position," select "sidebar-b" (this is the right side of the web page)

    5. Click the "Menu Assignment" tab:

    6. Change "Module Assignment" to "Only on the pages selected"
    7. For "Menu Selection," click the "None" link shown after "Select: All,"
    8. Select the menu items corresponding to the dropdown menu item list where this module should be displayed.  For example, if you are creating a menu module for the "People" dropdown list, check off the menu items under "People:"

    4. Click the Blog Layout tab (see #1 below).
    5. Change Article Order to "Article Order" (see #2 below).

  • Creating a Menu Item that links to a Category Blog

    Category Blog vs Category List

    • A "Category Blog" layout will display, for a selected category, content from the "Intro Text" of the article.  Intro Text is the content above the Read More divider.  If there is no Read More divider, all content from the article will show.
    • A "Category List" layout displays a listing of articles in a category. The titles will link to the article. It can be set to display some other information such as Author and Published date.  Instructions for setting up a "Category List" page are here.

    5. A "Menu Item Type" pop-up window will open. Choose the appropriate menu item type from the list.  Click Articles, then click Category Blog (see #2 below):

    6. Once this option is chosen, there will be a field titled "Choose a category". Select the appropriate category from the drop down list:

    7. If your new menu item should appear as a drop-down selection, go to the Parent Item drop-down menu and select the existing menu item that the new menu item should appear under (see #2 below). If you leave "Menu Item Root" selected for Parent Item, your new menu item will appear as a top-level item:

    8. Click Saveto the upper left: Joomla 3 "Save" button

    Ordering Articles

    1. To adjust ordering of articles, go to the "Blog Layout" tab (see #1 below) and select one of the following options from the "Article Order" dropdown menu (see #2 below):
      • Use Global (in parentheses will be the default "Global" setting)
      • Featured Articles Order
      • Most Recent First
      • Oldest First
      • Title Alphabetical

    Category Blog vs Category List

    A "Category List" Layout is appropriate for larger categories, or categories with long articles (such as faculty pages or course descriptions).  For displaying a smaller category, or a category with shorter articles (such as "News" or "Announcements"), a "Category Blog" may work better.

  • Creating and Editing URL Menu Items (Joomla 3.x)

    This procedure explains how to create menu items linking to external web sites using Joomla! 3.x. 


    Create a new external URL menu item

    • Log on to your site using the Administrator Login.
    • At the Joomla! Control Panel, click "Menu" (found under "Structure" to the left):

    • Click the name of the menu (found in the Title column) where the external link will be added (in most cases this will be "Main Menu").
    • Click the New icon in the upper left corner of the Menu : Menus page: New button
    • In the Menu : New Menu Item window, click the Select button:

    • A pop-up window will open. Click System Links(see #1 below), then select URL(see #2 below):

    • Enter a name for the link in the Menu Titlefield (see #1 below).
    • Enter the full web address (URL) of the external web site in the Link field (see #2 below).  The URL must contain the "http://" or "https://" portion of the web address.
    • (Optional) If the external link should appear in a dropdown menu below an existing menu item, select that menu item from the Parent Item dropdown menu (see #3 below).
    • (Recommended) When creating an external URL link, change Target Window to "New Window With Navigation."  This keeps your site in the original browser window when a visitor clicks on the external link (see #4 below).

    Edit an existing external URL menu item

    • Log on to your site using the Administrator Login.
    • At the Joomla! Control Panel, click "Menu" (found under "Structure" to the left):

    • Click the name of the menu (found in the Title column) containing the external link to be changed.
    • Click the menu item containing the external link to be changed.
    • Enter the updated web address (URL) of the external web site in the Link field.  The URL must contain the "http://" or "https://" portion of the web address:

  • Deleting a Menu Item

    Overview

    This procedure explains how to delete a menu item from a menu. 

    We recommend unpublishing a menu item if you do not want to permanently delete it.

    In this example, we will delete the menu item "PLAYGROUND" in the Main Menu:

    1. Login to the Administrator back-end URL for the website.
    2. Go to Menus (see #1 below) and select the menu containing the item to be unpublished (see #2 below):

    4. Click the Trashbutton (see #4 below).
